Changes in telecommunication systems infrastructure that are caused by transition to new network technologies, a phased shift from channel switching technologies to packet switching (IP/MPLS/Ethernet), and developing of cellular systems (LTE and 5G), as well as ever increasing demands for accuracy and stability of timing signals also entail changes in approaches to solving the problems of frequency and timing support. This paper describes problems which arise in modern and advanced telecommunication networks when synchronization signals are transmitted, as well as the topical technologies of their solution and directions of ongoing and future research.
